Protecting a Family for the Price of a Pizza

How two agents helped protect a family with affordable term life insurance for just $10 a month!

On July 9, 2008, Matrix Direct accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D) insurance agent Sparky Watson called a prospective customer who was shopping for term life insurance. Health conditions prevented the man from qualifying for term life insurance, but Sparky talked to him about purchasing an accidental death insurance policy to protect his family in the event he died in an accident.

As is often the case, the man rejected even the idea of dying in an accident and didn't want to purchase the accidental death protection or consider spending about $10 per month to protect his family. Sparky was persistent in explaining the variety of accidental death possibilities – including car accidents and natural disasters – but the man remained defiant. He even declared that he was NOT going to die in an accident, but rather that he was going to die of old age in his sleep.

Sparky was able to help the man better understand that we never know how we are going to die and that having some insurance is better than none at all. The man eventually agreed and purchased an American General Life Insurance Company AD&D policy for $100,000 in coverage. 

Just a few months later, on September 10, 2008, the newspaper in Murray, Kentucky reported that a local man had been killed in a two-vehicle wreck. According to police, the 54-year-old man that Sparky convinced to purchase an AD&D policy, had crossed the turning lane into oncoming traffic in front of a local restaurant, colliding with another vehicle. The customer later died from his injuries.

The man's sister received $100,000 on October 12, 2008 for the accidental death of her brother, who had no other life insurance or financial protection for his family. Without that phone call with Sparky, the man's family would have been forced to scrape together every penny of their savings to properly bury their loved one.

As Sparky asked the man on the phone that day, “Isn't it worth giving up one pizza per month to protect your family for $100,000?”
